If you wanted to read your ebook reader in the dark you would have to purchase a bulky aftermarket light or a case with a built in light. Honestly, the glow feature is one of the best new technological advances to hit the e-reader scene in a long time. In the settings menu there is an option to change the different levels of luminosity. The glow feature is not always on by default, but you have to hold down the N button for around two seconds to turn on the light. In some cases, because they are spread out, I found that some lines of text are darker than others. There are a total of eight LED lights that are spread around the bezel that provide a fair amount of light. Instead of having the light appear from underneath the screen like most tablets on the market, it emits from the same area as the IR display. The big draw on this new e-reader is the Glow function that allows you to read in the dark. This allows for pin-point accuracy in terms of interacting with the menus and keyboard. It features an infrared display that is on the side of the bezel. The Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight is a full touchscreen e-reader that is one of the most responsive devices on the market. Most of your daily functions tend to zip along fairly fine with the processor and 256 MB of RAM. If you need more space to store your books and other media you can expand it up to 32 GB via the Micro SD Card. Underneath the hood is a 800 Mhz processor with 2 GB of internal memory. The resolution of 800 x 600 is comparable with most other e-readers on the market, like the Kindle Touch and the Nook Simple Touch released last year. The Barnes and Noble Simple Touch with Glowlight features a six inch e-ink pearl display. Is this new form of e-reader just a gimmick or does it raise the bar? Unlike LCD screens, it does not burn your eyes when you are reading in the dark. It maintains the same e-ink display found in previous models of the Nook Simple Touch, which makes it very easy on the eyes during long reading sessions. In fact a CM11 ROM with Android 4.4 is currently under development. The Barnes and Noble Simple Touch with Glowlight is a new breed of e-reader that allows you to read in the dark. It’s good to see that developers are still working on it. None of the Android devices with those faster processors are anywhere near as fast as an optimized Nook Touch, and battery life isn’t as good with them either.įour years after its initial release, the Nook Touch is still one of the most versatile E Ink ereaders out there. Most E Ink ereaders released now come with single core 1.0 GHz processors, and some of the Android-powered E Ink ereaders have dual-core 1.0 GHz (and supposedly 1.2 GHz in a couple cases). People are always complaining when new ereaders come out that they don’t have newer, faster processors. The Nook Touch is proof that that’s all E Ink ereaders need because it’s still to this day the fastest E Ink ereader out there. Plus it’s surprising just how smoothly an E Ink Nook can play videos, especially considering the older single core 800 MHz processor that it uses. Playing videos and audio isn’t anything that is new for the Nook Touch, but I still can’t help but be amazed after all these years how many different ways people use Nook ereaders. You can find the download and install directions for the FastMode & USB Sound ROM on this thread at the XDA forums.
